A Lesson for Future Working Parents

Looking forward to a new semester at FDU, where I'll meet a new crop of future working parents
Looking forward to a new semester at FDU, where I’ll meet a new crop of future working parents (apologies for the dorkiness of this picture)

Here’s a lesson for future working parents, and for those of us already in the thick of juggling work and life.

As a business school professor and an advocate for work-family balance, I feel a certain obligation to not only teach my students what they need to be great business leaders, but also help them gain a perspective that will help them lead a balanced life.

My semester begins today, and I’d like to share an appropriate excerpt from my book, The Working Dad’s Survival Guide, in which I share some advice for my students, most of whom are future working parents:

This book blew my mind and I handed it to my husband. It then blew his mind.

Hi Ladies! Apologies for being so direct. I think that The Working Dad’s Survival Guide would make an excellent Father’s Day gift for the dads in your life.

Most dads are working hard and doing a good job in providing for their families and being involved, loving dads. But we all could use some help, advice and encouragement. that’s why I wrote The Working Dad’s Survival Guide– it is full of relatable stories and advice that dads can use right now to make the work-family juggle a little easier.

Reader Reviews of The Working Dad’s Survival Guide

What do the first batch of reader reviews on Amazon.com have to say about the Working Dad’s Survival Guide? Thankfully, so far, really good things.

Book coverHands down, the scariest and most exciting part of writing a book is launching it out into the world to see how the market, and more importantly, how readers react.

What if no one cares? Worse, what if people don’t like it?

I’m very happy to report that the early returns on The Working Dad’s Survival Guide are strong (It was initially the #1 Best Seller for Job Markets and Advice on Amazon). But more importantly, the book is out there helping people. Here’s what readers have to say about The Working Dad’s Survival Guide (now available as an e-book and audio book!) through their reviews on Amazon:

The Evolution of My Book Cover

The cover design for the Working Dad's Survival Guide was a study in evolution
The cover design for the Working Dad’s Survival Guide was a study in evolution

The most frequent comment I get about The Working Dad’s Survival Guide is, “I LOVE the cover.” I love it, too.

Like most things involved with publishing a book, it is a process of creating, editing, trashing, starting over, editing, deciding, tweaking and finally launching something into the world. Creative processes are not easy, and there’s a lot of effort going on behind the scenes.

For today’s post, I want to take a detour from the concerns of working dads, and to share with you the long and winding road of selecting a cover design. (Please note that this artwork is NOT to be used without permission)

Working Dads and Parental Leave: My MSNBC Interview

One of the reasons I wrote The Working Dad’s Survival Guide was to help draw attention to the challenges faced by working dads and how corporate and public policy can address them. Father’s Day is Over. Don’t Forget About Working Dads

nbc1
The Working Dad’s Survival Guide was featured nationwide on NBC News

It’s no secret why I launched The Working Dad’s Survival Guide (still Amazon’s #1 New Release in Job Markets & Advice!) just a few weeks before Father’s Day. This is the one time of the year when working dads’ concerns get the attention and publicity they deserve. In fact, lots of the media I’ve done was packaged as part of Father’s Day news items.

I’m proud of this work, but I think it would be a shame if the concerns of working fathers recede into the background, now that Father’s Day is over. After all, we are dads throughout the entire year.
